Someone tells you to relax. You know they mean well. And you notice that the instruction does exactly nothing. If anything, you feel a little more tense than you did a second ago. There is a good reason for that, and it isn't a failure of willpower.
Regulation is a state, not a decision
Your autonomic nervous system runs quietly in the background, keeping you alive and adjusting you to the world around you. It does this automatically. You don't choose your heart rate, your breathing, or whether your shoulders climb toward your ears in a hard conversation. Those responses come from the body, not from a decision.
So when someone says "just relax," they are asking you to make a choice about something that isn't a choice. Calm is not a setting you flip on. It is a state your nervous system moves into when it senses enough safety.
Neuroception: the scanner you can't turn off
Underneath everything, your nervous system is constantly scanning for cues of safety or danger. It checks inside your body, the environment around you, and the people you are with. Dr. Stephen Porges, who developed Polyvagal Theory, called this process neuroception. It happens below conscious awareness, faster than thought.
That's why you can be at a perfectly ordinary dinner and still feel on edge, or lie down in a quiet room and stay wide awake. Your thinking brain may know you are safe. Your nervous system hasn't agreed yet.
Three states, none of them wrong
Polyvagal Theory describes three primary states your nervous system moves between:
- Ventral vagal: safe and connected. You feel calm, grounded, and present. You can think clearly, connect with others, and rest.
- Sympathetic: fight or flight. Energized and alert. This is where worry, irritability, racing thoughts, and muscle tension live.
- Dorsal vagal: freeze or shutdown. Heavy, numb, foggy, exhausted. It looks like collapse, but it is a protective response too.
None of these states is bad. The trouble is getting stuck in one, or shifting into protection when nothing is actually threatening you. For a fuller walkthrough, see Understanding Your Nervous System.
Why trying harder backfires
Effort is a sympathetic activity. When you grit your teeth and try to force yourself calm, you are adding more activation to a system that is already activated. It's like pressing harder on the gas pedal to slow the car down.
That's also why frustration piles on so quickly. First you feel tense. Then you feel tense about being tense. Then you feel like you're failing at the one thing everyone says should be easy. Each layer is more sympathetic charge, not less.
What actually helps
If calm can't be commanded, it can be invited. The nervous system moves toward regulation when it receives enough cues of safety, and those cues come mostly through the body and through other people.
Co-regulation. Nervous systems settle each other. A steady voice, a warm face, someone who is not in a hurry: these are some of the strongest safety cues there are. We are wired to borrow calm from one another before we can find it alone.
Simple somatic practices. Somatic exercises are gentle, body-based practices that offer your nervous system cues of safety. Three you can try right now:
- Orient to the room. Slowly let your eyes wander and land on whatever they like. Notice a color, a shape, some light. Let your head turn with your eyes. You are giving your scanner fresh evidence that this place is safe.
- Lengthen the exhale. Don't force a deep breath. Just let the out-breath be a little longer than the in-breath, a few times. A long exhale is one of the body's own signals that the danger has passed.
- Feel what's holding you. Notice your feet on the floor and the chair under you. Let your weight settle. Support is a safety cue, and your body can register it directly.
None of these require effort. They ask you to notice, not to perform.
