IASIS Neurofeedback for sleep and insomnia
Lying awake at 2 a.m. is rarely a willpower problem. It is usually a nervous system that has not received the message that the day is over. Trauma-Informed Nervous System Coaching and IASIS Neurofeedback offer two gentle ways to help it get that message.
How sleep trouble shows up in the nervous system
Sleep is not something you do. It is something your body allows when it feels safe enough to let go. That is why you cannot force it, and why trying harder usually backfires.
In Polyvagal terms, falling asleep asks the nervous system to leave the sympathetic state (fight or flight) and settle into the ventral vagal state of rest, digest, and connect. When the system is regulated, that shift happens on its own. On high alert, it stalls: your head hits the pillow and the body keeps scanning. Waking at 3 a.m. with a jolt is often the same alarm firing again.
Some people sleep nine hours and still wake exhausted, heavy, and foggy. That can point toward dorsal shutdown, where the system has dropped into a low-energy, conserving mode.
Long stress, grief, caregiving, shift work, or older experiences the body never finished with can all keep the system stuck. That does not mean something is wrong with you. Your nervous system is doing its protective job and needs help learning that night is safe. Read more about your nervous system →
How IASIS Neurofeedback may help
IASIS Microcurrent Neurofeedback (MCN) is a gentle, non-invasive, FDA-registered brain wellness technology. Five pairs of small electrodes read your brainwave activity, and a brief, imperceptible microcurrent signal seems to help the brain let go of stuck patterns so the nervous system can become more flexible and regulated on its own.
For sleep, that matters because a system that can downshift during the day tends to downshift more easily at night. Insomnia is among the conditions that seem to be helped by IASIS Neurofeedback, and clients often report feeling calmer, more grounded, and more rested over time.
There is nothing to practice and nothing to get right; you rest while the system works. IASIS MCN does not act on sleep itself; it supports the underlying dysregulation that poor sleep is often signaling. See the published research →
Where coaching fits
Trauma-Informed Nervous System Coaching is the primary service at Apex NeuroCare, and for sleep it works on what the pillow cannot: the hours before bed, and the state your body carries into them.
Rooted in Polyvagal Theory, coaching helps you recognize what your system is doing as evening approaches and gives you simple somatic (body-based) tools to guide it toward settling. We work gently with what shows up at night rather than analyzing your history. Many clients find the same tools useful at 3 a.m.
Coaching and IASIS MCN each stand alone, and many people combine them: coaching helps you process, and IASIS helps your brain and body hold the change. Coaching is offered in person in Apex, NC and the Triangle, and online worldwide. It is not psychotherapy or counseling, and it works alongside, not instead of, care from your physician.
What to expect
- Your first IASIS session runs about 45 to 60 minutes and includes intake paperwork and a short observation sheet; follow-ups take about 30 minutes.
- It is completely passive. We prep five electrode sites, apply paste, and you relax. You will not feel anything, though many people feel calmer by the end.
- It is cumulative, not one-and-done. Sessions run as a series, and packages are available. See pricing and packages →
- Insurance and payment. IASIS MCN is not usually covered by insurance, and we cannot bill insurance. Many clients use HSA or FSA funds.
- Medication. IASIS MCN does not interfere with medication, though over time some clients feel more sensitive to theirs. Talk with your prescribing physician before changing anything.

Is this right for you?
This work tends to suit people who:
- take an hour or more to fall asleep
- wake in the small hours wired or racing
- sleep, but never feel rested
- want a drug-free, non-invasive option alongside the care they already have
When to seek medical care. Sleep problems can have medical causes. Loud snoring, pauses in breathing during sleep, dozing off during the day, or insomnia that is new or severe all deserve a physician's attention. If you are thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), or call 911 in an emergency. Our services support wellness and regulation alongside, not instead of, your medical or mental-health care.
Common questions
Can IASIS Neurofeedback help with insomnia?
Insomnia is on the list of conditions that seem to be helped by IASIS Neurofeedback. IASIS MCN does not act on sleep directly; it supports the nervous system's own capacity to regulate, and clients often report feeling calmer and more rested over time. Results vary, and we make no promises about outcomes.
How many sessions before my sleep changes?
There is no set number; every nervous system responds in its own time. IASIS MCN is cumulative rather than one-and-done. Some people feel more settled after their first session; for most, the shifts build gradually across a series, which is why sessions come in packages. We will map out a realistic plan in your free consultation.
Can I keep taking my sleep medication?
Yes. IASIS MCN does not interfere with medication. Over successive sessions, some clients notice they feel more sensitive to their medication. Do not change a dose on your own; talk with your prescribing physician about any changes you notice.
