The connection

How brain fog and the nervous system are connected

Brain fog is not a medical term, but almost everyone knows the feeling. You read the same paragraph three times. You lose the word you were reaching for. You may be doing everything "right" and still feel like you are behind a pane of glass.

Persistent brain fog has many possible medical causes, from thyroid and sleep issues to medication side effects, hormonal changes, and the lingering effects of illness. It is worth talking with your physician and ruling those out before assuming it is "just stress." We are not a substitute for that conversation.

Stress is often part of the picture, though. Your autonomic nervous system is always scanning for cues of safety or danger, and when it senses danger it shifts into a protective state. Sometimes that is fight-or-flight: racing thoughts, tension, and attention that keeps scanning for threats. Sometimes it is shutdown: heavy, numb, unmotivated, and foggy. Both are intelligent survival responses, and both make clear thinking hard, especially when a long season of stress, illness, or overwork has left the system stuck there. Our guide to understanding your nervous system explains why you can't simply think your way out.

A gentle, passive approach

How IASIS Neurofeedback may help

IASIS Microcurrent Neurofeedback (MCN) is a gentle, non-invasive technology that helps the brain and nervous system release stuck stress patterns and become more flexible and regulated. An extremely low, imperceptible microcurrent signal does the work while you sit back and relax. You do not have to concentrate or try harder, which matters when trying harder is exactly what you are tired of.

Brain fog and chronic fatigue are on the list of conditions that seem to be helped by IASIS Neurofeedback. IASIS does not act on any single symptom directly. It supports the nervous system's own capacity to regulate, and clients often report feeling calmer, clearer, more grounded, and less reactive over time. We don't promise that for you.

Our primary service

Where coaching fits

Trauma-Informed Nervous System Coaching is our primary service, and for brain fog it is often where change begins. If your system has been running on empty for a long time, insight alone is usually not enough. Your body needs the experience of safety, not just the idea of it.

In coaching we work gently, at your pace, rooted in Polyvagal Theory. You learn to recognize which state you are in, use simple somatic practices that offer your body cues of safety, and notice the habits, like overriding your limits or pushing through exhaustion, that keep your system in protection. Coaching is not psychotherapy or counseling. It is forward-looking and practical, in person or online.

Many clients combine the two: coaching helps you process and build new patterns, and IASIS helps your brain and body hold them. In-person visits can end with 30 minutes in the far infrared sauna.

Sessions, timing, and cost

What to expect

IASIS sessions are passive: a short observation sheet, five pairs of electrodes, and then you rest. You won't feel the signal, though many people report feeling calmer, more relaxed, alert, and focused by the end.

  • The initial session runs about 45 to 60 minutes and includes intake paperwork.
  • Follow-up sessions typically last about 30 minutes.
  • IASIS MCN is cumulative, not one-and-done, and works best as a series.
  • We offer packages for 12, 20, and 40 sessions. See pricing and packages for current rates.
  • We cannot accept insurance; many clients use HSA or FSA funds.

Every journey begins with a free phone consultation and a free intake and trial session. More answers are on our FAQ page.

A few honest words

Is this right for you?

Start with your physician. Brain fog that is persistent, worsening, or paired with other symptoms deserves a medical workup, and we never want a wellness service to delay one. Apex NeuroCare is a wellness practice in a home studio in Apex, NC, serving the Triangle in person and coaching clients online. We work alongside your medical and mental-health providers, not instead of them.

This work tends to suit people who:

  • have talked with their doctor and want gentle support for a stressed, depleted nervous system;
  • feel mentally tired, scattered, or "not themselves" after a long stretch of stress, illness, or overwhelm;
  • are looking for a passive, drug-free option;
  • can sit comfortably in a chair for about 30 minutes (our home studio is not currently wheelchair accessible).
Common questions

Brain fog, coaching, and IASIS

Is brain fog a medical condition?

Brain fog is a description, not a medical term, and it can have many causes, so please talk with a physician first. When medical causes have been considered and the fog remains, a nervous system stuck in protection is often part of the picture, and that is where coaching and IASIS Neurofeedback may help.

Do I have to do anything during an IASIS session?

No. IASIS MCN is completely passive. You fill out a short observation sheet, we position five pairs of electrodes, and then you relax. You won't feel the signal itself. Many people report feeling calmer, more relaxed, alert, and focused by the end, though everyone is different.

How is coaching different from therapy?

Coaching is not psychotherapy or counseling. It is a present-focused, body-based process that helps you understand your nervous system states and build practical tools for regulation. If your situation calls for mental-health care, we will gladly help you find a referral, and coaching can work alongside that care.

An important note. Apex NeuroCare is a wellness practice, not a medical office. Brain fog is among the conditions that seem to be helped by IASIS Neurofeedback; we do not claim to resolve it. Our services are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease and are not a substitute for medical or mental-health care, psychotherapy, or counseling. Coaching is not therapy. Always consult your physician about persistent brain fog or any other medical concern.
