I knew what it felt like to live in a cycle of overthinking, tension, and emotional exhaustion — wanting relief but not knowing how to truly find it in a way that lasted. Everything began to shift when I was introduced to somatic practices and parts work. For the first time, I wasn't just trying to "think" my way into healing — I was learning how to listen to my body, understand my internal patterns, and gently reconnect with the parts of me that had been carrying so much for so long. That's where real, lasting change began. Not from pushing harder — but from learning how to feel safe, regulated, and whole from the inside out. That personal transformation is what led me into this work. How I work with clients today ### Practical, body-based skills that actually last I help you calm your nervous system, quiet racing thoughts, and reconnect with your body so you can feel grounded, present, and like yourself again. Together, we build skills that increase your capacity for stress, strengthen emotional resilience, and create sustainable change. In our work together, I integrate somatic (body-based) coaching, parts work, and IASIS Microcurrent Neurofeedback to support your nervous system in finding both calm and sustainable energy — creating change in the moment and helping rewire patterns at the nervous system level, so the shifts you experience hold. Lived experience & professional training ### I hold space with care for what you're carrying I bring both training and lived experience into this space — including, among others: - Complex & developmental trauma - PTSD - Adoption (personal & family) - Attachment challenges - Developmental differences - Chronic stress - High-performance environments - Faith & healing, including church hurt My philosophy ### Healing happens through the body, not just the mind Every trigger, emotional reaction, or pattern is not a failure — it's an invitation to gently return to what was never fully processed, with compassion. Your body holds both your pain and your capacity to heal. Your nervous system isn't broken — it's adaptive and wise. Your coping strategies aren't flaws — they are survival responses. True healing happens through safety, attunement, and embodiment. ### Longing to feel more at home within yourself? How we work ### We follow your nervous system's pace - We prioritize safety and regulation first. - We work with what is present in the moment — not a fixed script. - We trust your body's innate wisdom to guide the process. - We work with the body and the brain, because lasting change requires both. Healing unfolds naturally — not forcefully. Wholeness ### Not becoming someone new — reconnecting to who you already are Over time, parts of us disconnect in order to survive. Wholeness is the process of gently reconnecting with them, so they no longer have to work so hard to protect you. #### When parts are carrying too much - Anxiety or emotional reactivity - Inner criticism or shame - People-pleasing or perfectionism - Numbness or disconnection #### What becomes possible - Feeling more grounded and regulated in your body - A compassionate relationship with yourself - A sense of earned secure attachment - More clarity, freedom, and authenticity This isn't about fixing yourself — it's about integrating the parts of you that have been carrying too much for too long. Why you feel overwhelmed ### Even when you're trying so hard Unprocessed emotions don't disappear — they get stored in the body. It can feel like trying to hold multiple beach balls under water: exhausting, unsustainable, and eventually… something pops up. When it does, it may look like emotional overwhelm, reactivity, anxiety, or shutdown. This work helps you stop fighting what's underneath — and safely release it. So your system no longer has to work so hard to hold it all together. And somatic exercises — body-based practices that offer your nervous system cues of safety — are part of every coaching session. Curious what somatic work actually is? Better together ### Coaching helps you process. IASIS helps your system exhale. If coaching helps us understand and process what's been held beneath the surface, IASIS Neurofeedback helps the nervous system finally let go. It supports your brain in releasing stress patterns and makes it easier to stay anchored in the new pathways we're creating — so change doesn't just happen in session, but continues beyond it. Many clients find that combining neurofeedback with somatic coaching accelerates progress and supports longer-lasting change. About IASIS Neurofeedback → ### Ready to feel more like yourself again? What a session involves, who it helps, and how to book a free consultation. ## IASIS Microcurrent Neurofeedback A passive, non-invasive way to help the brain release stuck patterns and return to flexible self-regulation — without medication, and without effort. What it is ### Sit back and relax while the system works IASIS Microcurrent Neurofeedback (MCN) is an FDA-registered, non-invasive brain wellness technology. Unlike traditional neurofeedback, IASIS MCN is completely passive — a brief, imperceptible microcurrent signal gently encourages the brain to release stuck patterns of dysregulation, allowing it to reorganize and optimize on its own. Safe, painless, and drug-free. - FDA-registered EEG amplifier - Completely passive - Drug-free & non-invasive - ~30-minute follow-ups How a session works ### Most of the visit, you simply rest #### Check in You fill out a short observation sheet ranking your current symptoms. #### Prep the sites We gently cleanse each area, apply connectivity paste, and position five pairs of electrodes. This is the longest part. #### Relax During treatment you simply sit back. The EEG leads monitor your brainwaves and the processor delivers a gentle microcurrent response. #### Reset That gentle signal helps the brain release stuck patterns and reset toward regulation. Who can benefit? Anyone and everyone. IASIS MCN is safe and non-invasive — if you can sit in a chair, you can receive a treatment. There is no medical condition, age, medication, allergy, or other factor that would prevent someone from safely being treated. Conditions ### Conditions that seem to be helped by IASIS Neurofeedback IASIS doesn't treat symptoms directly — it supports the underlying nervous-system dysregulation those symptoms are signaling. - ADD/ADHD - Addiction - Anger and rage - Anxiety / panic attacks - Aspects of autism spectrum disorders - Brain fog - Chronic fatigue - Chronic pain - Cognitive deficits from stroke - Concussions - Dementia - Depression - Focus - Headaches - Impulse control - Insomnia - Migraine - OCD - Overwhelm - PTSD - Stress - Strokes - Traumatic brain injury - Peak performance - …and more See the full Conditions page → A powerful synergy ### How IASIS pairs with coaching For those who are ready to go deeper, I integrate IASIS Microcurrent Neurofeedback — a gentle, brain-based technology that supports nervous system regulation and brainwave optimization — alongside somatic and parts-based coaching. Coaching and IASIS each work well on their own, and many people choose to combine them for a deeper, longer-lasting shift. Neurofeedback works by: - helping the brain release stress patterns - supporting regulation of the autonomic nervous system - reinforcing healthier neural pathways Coaching helps you process. Neurofeedback helps your brain and body hold the change. This combination can be especially helpful for anxiety and chronic stress, nervous system dysregulation, emotional overwhelm, and difficulty "staying" in a regulated state. Targeted exercises to support brain development and optimize neurological function — for children and adults. ## Developmental Movements Targeted movement protocols that integrate primitive reflexes and support optimal brain development — at any age, from the bottom up. Developmental movements are targeted exercise protocols designed to integrate primitive reflexes — automatic movement patterns that emerge in infancy and should naturally integrate as the brain matures. When these reflexes remain active, they can contribute to challenges with focus, coordination, emotional regulation, and learning. Our protocols support optimal brain development and function at any age. ### Babies move in order to learn Developmental movements are the natural, patterned movements babies make — especially during tummy time — that help build, organize, and regulate the brain and nervous system. While it's often said that babies learn to move, the reality is that babies move in order to learn. These early movements play a critical role in developing coordination, regulation, and the foundation for learning and relationships. ### Why these movements matter During the first year of life, a baby's brain develops from the bottom up — starting with the brainstem (survival and regulation) and building toward higher-level functions like emotional regulation, attention, and learning. When foundational movement patterns are missed or incomplete, it can create gaps that may show up later as anxiety or emotional dysregulation, difficulty with focus and attention, learning challenges, sensory sensitivity, coordination challenges, or social and behavioral struggles. ### These gaps can be addressed at any age Thanks to the brain's natural ability to change — neuroplasticity — it's possible to rebuild and strengthen these foundational patterns at any age. Through targeted developmental movement exercises, we revisit missed movement patterns, support the nervous system in reorganizing, and build stronger neural pathways. As these patterns become fully integrated, the body no longer needs the exercises — the foundation has been restored. ### Does my child have developmental gaps? 10 common signs - Skipped crawling on tummy and/or hands and knees - Disliked tummy time - Spent more time in baby swings, bouncy seats, bumbos, and/or carriers than on their tummy during their first year - Walked early - Seems uncoordinated and clumsy - Struggles with emotional control - Has trouble focusing - Struggles to process what they see, hear, and feel - Doesn't seem to know where their body is in space - Socially awkward If you recognize any of these signs, there could be developmental gaps. A consult is the best way to discuss whether a developmental movement program is your next best step. ### What it looks like to work together - Comprehensive assessment — a detailed evaluation to identify specific developmental gaps and retained primitive reflexes. - Personalized home exercise program — a custom daily movement program designed to be done at home. - Ongoing support & progress tracking — we reassess regularly and adjust the program as each stage integrates. A general guideline is approximately 150 hours of targeted movement practice to fully integrate foundational patterns. As integration occurs, the exercises for that gap are no longer necessary. ### Developmental movement rates - Assessment (movement & retained primitive reflexes): $250 - Personalized exercise plan: $300 - Reassessment & updated plan: $200 per session - Package: $850 — includes assessment, personalized exercise plan, and up to three re-evaluations with plan updates In person in Apex, NC — serving Apex, Cary, Raleigh, Durham, Holly Springs, Fuquay-Varina, Morrisville, Chapel Hill, and the greater Triangle region of North Carolina. By supporting the nervous system in returning to regulation, IASIS helps with the conditions that are signaling the system is struggling. An important note. IASIS MCN is a complementary wellness approach and does not diagnose, treat, or cure medical or mental health conditions. Individual experiences and results vary. ### Wondering if IASIS could help what you're carrying? The best way to find out is a free 20-minute phone consultation. Book a Free Consultation --- # IASIS Neurofeedback for Anxiety in Apex, NC | Apex NeuroCare URL: https://apexneurocare.com/conditions/anxiety/ Summary: Anxiety is among the conditions that seem to be helped by IASIS Neurofeedback. How nervous system coaching and IASIS MCN in Apex, NC may support a calmer body. ## IASIS Neurofeedback for anxiety When your body stays on high alert long after the moment has passed, it is not a character flaw. It is a nervous system doing its job a little too well. Trauma-Informed Nervous System Coaching and IASIS Neurofeedback offer two gentle ways to support it. Start with the body ### How anxiety shows up in the nervous system Anxiety is usually described as a thinking problem: worry, what-ifs, a mind that will not switch off. But most of it lives in the body first. A tight chest. A racing heart. Shoulders that never let go. In Polyvagal terms, this is the sympathetic state, often called fight or flight. Your autonomic nervous system constantly scans for cues of safety and danger. When it senses threat, it mobilizes: heart rate climbs, muscles brace, attention narrows. In a real emergency, that is exactly right. The trouble comes when the system gets stuck there. After long stress, or experiences the body never fully finished with, the alarm keeps sounding when nothing is wrong. Racing thoughts are often the nervous system's story about a body that already feels unsafe. Some people swing the other way, into dorsal shutdown: numb, foggy, exhausted, checked out. None of this means you are broken. Your nervous system is working hard to protect you and could use help learning that it is safe to stand down. Read more about Polyvagal Theory → A passive reset ### How IASIS Neurofeedback may help IASIS Microcurrent Neurofeedback (MCN) is a gentle, non-invasive, FDA-registered brain wellness technology. Five pairs of small electrodes read your brainwave activity, and a brief, imperceptible microcurrent signal seems to help the brain release stuck patterns so the nervous system can become more flexible and regulated on its own. For anxiety, that matters because nothing is asked of you. You do not have to talk about what scares you, relive anything, or try harder to calm down. Anxiety and panic attacks are among the conditions that seem to be helped by IASIS Neurofeedback, and clients often report feeling calmer, clearer, more grounded, and less reactive over a series of sessions. See the published research → A Powerful Combination ### Where coaching fits Trauma-Informed Nervous System Coaching is one of the core services at Apex NeuroCare and can be very helpful with anxiety. Rooted in Polyvagal Theory, it helps you learn your own patterns: what tips you into high alert, what your early warning signs feel like, and what actually helps your body settle. Sessions are gentle and collaborative. We begin with safety and simple somatic (body-based) tools for the moment anxiety rises, then work with what is present in the body now rather than retelling your past. Over time, your system learns to respond instead of react. Coaching and IASIS MCN each work well alone, and many clients combine them: coaching helps you learn to regulate your nervous system, and IASIS helps your brain and body hold the change. Coaching is offered in person in Apex, NC and the Triangle, and online worldwide. Coaching is educational and supportive in nature. It is not therapy or mental health treatment and is not intended to replace appropriate medical or mental health care. Practical details ### What to expect - Your first IASIS session runs about 45 to 60 minutes and includes intake paperwork and a short observation sheet; follow-ups take about 30 minutes. - It is completely passive. We prep five electrode sites, apply paste, and you relax. You will not feel anything, though many people feel calmer by the end. - It is cumulative, not one-and-done. Sessions run as a series, and packages are available. See pricing and packages → - Insurance and payment. IASIS MCN is not usually covered by insurance, and we cannot bill insurance. Many clients use HSA or FSA funds. - Medication. IASIS MCN does not interfere with medication, though over time some clients feel more sensitive to theirs. This work tends to suit people who: - feel on edge or braced for much of the day - have talked it through and still feel it in their body - live with panic attacks, overwhelm, or long-running stress - want a drug-free, non-invasive option alongside the care they already have When to seek medical care. Anxiety that arrives with chest pain, shortness of breath, or dizziness, or that is new or severe, deserves a physician's attention. If you are thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), or call 911 in an emergency. Before you book ### Common questions Q: Can IASIS Neurofeedback help with anxiety? Anxiety and panic attacks are on the list of conditions that seem to be helped by IASIS Neurofeedback. IASIS MCN does not act on anxiety directly; it supports the nervous system's own capacity to regulate, and clients often report feeling calmer, clearer, and less reactive over time. Q: Should I start with coaching or with IASIS Neurofeedback? Many clients begin with Trauma-Informed Nervous System Coaching, which gives you practical tools for the moment anxiety rises. IASIS MCN can be added alongside coaching to help your system hold the changes, or used on its own. A free 20-minute consultation is the easiest way to decide where to begin. Q: Will I have to talk about what makes me anxious? Not in an IASIS session. It is completely passive: you relax while the system works, with nothing to relive and nothing to change in your thinking. Coaching does involve conversation, but it is present-focused and moves at your pace; you never have to retell your history. An important note. IASIS MCN is a complementary wellness approach and does not diagnose, treat, or cure medical or mental health conditions. Individual experiences and results vary. ### Ready to help your nervous system stand down? Start with a free 20-minute phone consultation. Book a Free Consultation --- # IASIS Neurofeedback for Sleep & Insomnia in Apex, NC | Apex NeuroCare URL: https://apexneurocare.com/conditions/sleep-insomnia/ Summary: Insomnia is among the conditions that seem to be helped by IASIS Neurofeedback. How nervous system coaching and IASIS MCN in Apex, NC may help you rest. ## IASIS Neurofeedback for sleep and insomnia Lying awake at 2 a.m. is rarely a willpower problem. It is usually a nervous system that has not received the message that the day is over. Trauma-Informed Nervous System Coaching and IASIS Neurofeedback offer two gentle ways to help it get that message. Start with the body ### How sleep trouble shows up in the nervous system From a Polyvagal Theory perspective, falling asleep requires the nervous system to move out of defensive states and into the physiological conditions that support rest and restoration. When the system senses enough safety, the body can gradually let go of vigilance and allow sleep to emerge. When the system remains on alert, or in a sympathetic state, that shift can stall: your head hits the pillow, but your body keeps scanning. Waking at 3 a.m. with a jolt can be another expression of that protective alarm system activating. Some people sleep for nine hours and still wake exhausted, heavy, or foggy. This may reflect a nervous system that is spending too much time in a low-energy, protective state, a dorsal vagal shutdown or immobilization. Long-term stress, grief, caregiving, shift work, or experiences the body has learned to associate with danger can all influence these patterns. That does not mean something is wrong with you. Your nervous system is trying to protect you. The goal is not to force sleep, but to help your system experience enough safety that it can gradually release vigilance and allow sleep to happen. Read more about your nervous system → A passive reset ### How IASIS Neurofeedback may help IASIS Microcurrent Neurofeedback (MCN) is a gentle, non-invasive, FDA-registered brain wellness technology. Five pairs of small electrodes read your brainwave activity, and a brief, imperceptible microcurrent signal seems to help the brain let go of stuck patterns so the nervous system can become more flexible and regulated on its own. For sleep, that matters because a system that can downshift during the day tends to downshift more easily at night. Insomnia is among the conditions that seem to be helped by IASIS Neurofeedback, and clients often report feeling calmer, more grounded, and more rested over time. There is nothing to practice and nothing to get right; you rest while the system works. See the published research → A Powerful Combination ### Where coaching fits Trauma-Informed Nervous System Coaching is one of the core services at Apex NeuroCare, and for sleep it works on what the pillow cannot: the hours before bed, and the state your body carries into them. Rooted in Polyvagal Theory, coaching helps you recognize what your system is doing as evening approaches and gives you simple somatic (body-based) tools to guide it toward settling. We work gently with what shows up at night rather than analyzing your history. Many clients find the same tools useful at 3 a.m. Coaching and IASIS MCN each stand alone, and many people combine them: coaching helps you learn to regulate your nervous system, and IASIS helps your brain and body hold the change. Book a Free Consultation --- # IASIS Neurofeedback for PTSD & Trauma in Apex, NC | Apex NeuroCare URL: https://apexneurocare.com/conditions/ptsd-trauma/ Summary: PTSD is among the conditions that seem to be helped by IASIS Neurofeedback. How IASIS and trauma-informed nervous system coaching may help, in Apex, NC. ## IASIS Neurofeedback for PTSD & trauma When your nervous system has learned to stay on guard, calm can feel out of reach. Trauma-informed nervous system coaching and IASIS Microcurrent Neurofeedback are two gentle ways to support your system in settling, offered in Apex, NC and the Triangle. Start here ### How PTSD and trauma show up in the nervous system Trauma is not only a memory. It is a pattern your body learned. When something overwhelming happened, your autonomic nervous system mobilized you to fight or flee, or shut you down so you could endure. That response kept you safe. The trouble comes when the system never gets the message that the danger has passed. Polyvagal Theory describes three states. In the ventral vagal state you feel safe, connected, and clear. In the sympathetic state you are on alert: racing thoughts, a pounding heart, irritability, poor sleep. In the dorsal vagal state you go numb, heavy, foggy, or far away. After trauma, many people live in the second or third state most of the time. Startling easily. Feeling on edge in crowds. Waking at 3 a.m. Feeling flat, or snapping at the people you love. None of this means you are broken. It means your nervous system is protecting you the best way it knows how. Our plain-language guide to Polyvagal Theory explains why. A passive approach ### How IASIS Neurofeedback may help PTSD is among the conditions that seem to be helped by IASIS Neurofeedback. So are anxiety, insomnia, and overwhelm, which often travel with trauma. IASIS does not target symptoms directly. It supports the underlying nervous-system dysregulation those symptoms are signaling. During a session, a brief, imperceptible microcurrent signal gently encourages the brain to release stuck patterns and reorganize on its own. You do not have to talk about what happened or relive past experiences. You simply sit back while the system works. Clients often report feeling calmer, clearer, more grounded, and less reactive over time. IASIS MCN is cumulative, so shifts build gently over a series of sessions. Our IASIS research page links to published work, and you can read more about how IASIS Neurofeedback works. A Powerful Combination ### Where Coaching Fits Trauma recovery involves more than feeling better in the moment—it involves developing a greater capacity to navigate life without being continually pulled into survival responses. Combined with IASIS, trauma-informed nervous system coaching can be a powerful part of that process. IASIS supports the nervous system; coaching helps you learn how to work with it. Trauma-informed nervous system coaching complements IASIS by helping you understand your nervous system, recognize triggers and patterns, track your state, and develop practical skills for returning to regulation. Over time, these skills can help you build greater capacity to respond to stress rather than automatically react—and to navigate life with greater resilience and flexibility. Coaching is educational and supportive in nature. It is not therapy or mental health treatment and is not intended to replace appropriate medical or mental health care. Practical details ### What to expect Every journey begins with a free 20-minute phone consultation to talk through whether coaching, IASIS Neurofeedback, or both make sense for you. If you choose IASIS, a session looks like this. - You fill out a short observation sheet. We prep the electrode sites, apply paste, and position five pairs of electrodes. - The session is passive. You relax while the system works and will not feel anything specifically. - The initial session runs about 45 to 60 minutes, including intake paperwork. Follow-ups typically take about 30 minutes. - IASIS MCN is not a one-and-done protocol, so we offer session packages. See pricing and packages for details. - We cannot accept insurance, and IASIS MCN is not usually covered. Many clients use HSA or FSA funds. Sessions take place in a home studio in Apex, NC. Coaching is also available online. More answers on our FAQ page. A good fit? ### Is this right for you? This work may be a good fit if you feel stuck on high alert or shut down and want a gentle, body-based approach; if talk therapy has helped but you want support that includes your body; or if you would rather not talk through what happened. Veterans and first responders are especially welcome. When to seek clinical care. If your symptoms are severe, if you are using substances to cope, or if daily life feels unmanageable, please also work with a physician or a licensed mental-health provider. We are glad to help you find a referral. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), or call 911 in an emergency. Common questions ### Questions people ask about PTSD and IASIS Q: Do I have to talk about what happened to me? No. IASIS Neurofeedback is completely passive and supports the nervous system without requiring you to relive past experiences. In coaching, we focus on what is showing up in your body right now rather than retelling your past. You decide what to share, and when. Q: How many IASIS sessions will I need? Every nervous system is different, so there is no single answer. IASIS MCN is cumulative rather than one-and-done, though many people report feeling calmer even after their first session. We offer packages of 12, 20, and 40 sessions; see our pricing page. We will talk through a plan at your free consultation. Q: Can I do this while I am in therapy or taking medication? Yes. IASIS MCN does not interfere with medication, and there is no medical condition, age, or medication that would prevent someone from safely receiving a session. Clients are strongly encouraged to consult their prescribing physician about any changes. Coaching and IASIS also work well alongside psychotherapy. An important note. IASIS MCN is a complementary wellness approach and does not diagnose, treat, or cure medical or mental health conditions. Individual experiences and results vary. ### Wondering whether this could help what you're carrying? Start with a free 20-minute phone consultation. No pressure, just a conversation. Book a Free Consultation --- # IASIS Neurofeedback for ADHD & Focus in Apex, NC | Apex NeuroCare URL: https://apexneurocare.com/conditions/adhd-focus/ Summary: ADD/ADHD and focus are among the conditions that seem to be helped by IASIS Neurofeedback. Gentle options for adults and children in Apex, NC. ## IASIS Neurofeedback for ADHD & focus Trouble focusing is rarely a matter of trying harder. More often it is a nervous system that has trouble settling. Apex NeuroCare offers three gentle ways to support attention and regulation for adults and children in Apex, NC and the Triangle. Start here ### How ADHD and focus struggles show up in the nervous system Attention depends on regulation. To focus, your nervous system needs to feel settled enough to stay in the state Polyvagal Theory calls ventral vagal: calm, present, and clear. From there the brain can filter distractions and follow through. In the sympathetic state the body is mobilized: restless, fidgety, quick to react, mind jumping from one thing to the next. In the dorsal vagal state it slows down: foggy, zoned out, hard to start anything. Many adults and children who struggle with focus bounce between the two all day, which is exhausting. You might recognize this in yourself: unfinished projects, lost time, too many tabs open. Or in your child: trouble sitting still, big emotions, homework that takes hours. With or without a formal ADHD label, the pattern underneath is often the same: a nervous system that struggles to stay regulated. Our guide to understanding your nervous system explains more. A passive approach ### How IASIS Neurofeedback may help ADD/ADHD, focus, impulse control, and brain fog are among the conditions that seem to be helped by IASIS Neurofeedback. IASIS Microcurrent Neurofeedback does not target attention directly. It supports the underlying nervous-system dysregulation that makes focus so hard to hold. During a session, a brief, imperceptible microcurrent signal gently encourages the brain to release stuck patterns and reorganize on its own. There is nothing to practice or get right; you simply sit back while the system works. Clients often report feeling calmer, clearer, and less reactive over time, and many feel more alert and focused by the end of a session. Because IASIS MCN is gentle and non-invasive, children can receive it too: if your child can sit in a chair, they can have a session. Read more about how IASIS Neurofeedback works. A Powerful Combination ### Where Coaching Fits IASIS MCN may help support a nervous system that has become overwhelmed or dysregulated. Coaching can help you build the awareness and skills to work with your nervous system in everyday life. You learn to recognize your body's signals, notice the state you're in, and use simple somatic tools to move back toward greater regulation. For adults with ADHD, that can mean greater capacity to initiate, sustain attention, recover from frustration, and follow through on what matters—even when tasks feel overwhelming, boring, or difficult to initiate. For parents, coaching can also support the parent-child relationship. Learning to recognize and regulate your own nervous system can make it easier to be present, staying grounded and responsive when your child's nervous system is struggling. Regulation is relational, and children often borrow calm from the adults around them. Coaching is available in person and online. Coaching is educational and supportive in nature. It is not therapy or mental health treatment and is not intended to replace appropriate medical or mental health care. From the bottom up ### Where developmental movements fit Some focus struggles have roots in early development. In the first year of life the brain builds from the bottom up through patterned movements such as tummy time and crawling, which help integrate primitive reflexes, the automatic movement patterns we are born with. When reflexes stay active past infancy, they can contribute to challenges with focus, coordination, emotional regulation, and learning. Developmental Movements is a third option at Apex NeuroCare. It begins with an assessment of movement patterns and retained primitive reflexes, followed by a personalized daily home exercise program and regular reassessments. Thanks to neuroplasticity, these foundations can be strengthened at any age, in children and adults. If your child skipped crawling, disliked tummy time, or seems clumsy, a movement assessment may be a useful next step. Practical details ### What to expect Every journey begins with a free 20-minute phone consultation about what you are seeing and which approach makes sense. If IASIS Neurofeedback is part of the plan, a session looks like this. - A short observation sheet, then we prep the electrode sites, apply paste, and position five pairs of electrodes. - The session is passive. You, or your child, relax while the system works and will not feel anything specifically. - The initial session runs about 45 to 60 minutes, including intake paperwork. Follow-ups typically take about 30 minutes. - IASIS MCN is cumulative rather than one-and-done, so we offer session packages. See pricing and packages for details. - We cannot accept insurance, and IASIS MCN is not usually covered. Many clients use HSA or FSA funds. Sessions take place in a home studio in Apex, NC. More answers on our FAQ page. A good fit? ### Is this right for you? This may be a good fit if you are an adult who feels scattered, foggy, or worn out from compensating; a parent seeking a gentle, non-invasive option for your child; or someone who wants to combine approaches. When to seek clinical care. If you or your child are struggling significantly at school, work, or home, please also work with your pediatrician, physician, or a licensed mental-health provider. We are glad to work alongside them. Common questions ### Questions people ask about ADHD, focus, and IASIS Q: Can my child receive IASIS Neurofeedback? Yes. IASIS MCN is gentle and non-invasive, and there is no age that would prevent someone from safely receiving a session. If your child can sit in a chair, they can receive a treatment. We do not make claims about outcomes for children; we can talk through what to expect at your consultation. Q: Does IASIS Neurofeedback interfere with ADHD medication? No. IASIS MCN does not interfere with medication. Any questions about medication that you or your child take belong with your prescribing physician. Q: Do I need a formal ADHD evaluation before I start? No. Apex NeuroCare does not provide medical or psychological evaluations. Our services support nervous-system regulation whether or not you have a formal label. If you would like an evaluation, your physician or a licensed provider is the right place to start. An important note. IASIS MCN is a complementary wellness approach and does not diagnose, treat, or cure medical or mental health conditions. Individual experiences and results vary. ### Curious whether this could help you or your child? Start with a free 20-minute phone consultation. No pressure, just a conversation. Book a Free Consultation --- # IASIS Neurofeedback for Concussion & TBI in Apex, NC | Apex NeuroCare URL: https://apexneurocare.com/conditions/concussion-tbi/ Summary: Concussion and TBI are among the conditions that seem to be helped by IASIS Neurofeedback. Gentle, passive sessions in Apex, NC, alongside your medical care. ## IASIS Neurofeedback for concussion and TBI When the scans are clear but you still don't feel like yourself, gentle support for the nervous system may help, alongside your medical care. The connection ### How a Head Injury and the Nervous System Are Connected A concussion or traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a medical event that deserves appropriate evaluation and care. But recovery doesn't always end when the initial injury has been assessed. In the weeks or months that follow, you may still feel foggy, tired, irritable, or easily overwhelmed. Headaches may linger. Sleep may be disrupted. Busy environments may suddenly feel like too much. You may find yourself more sensitive to light, sound, stress, or activity—or simply feel like you don't quite feel like yourself. Sometimes, these symptoms continue even when imaging is clear or the acute injury has resolved. That's where understanding the nervous system can offer another piece of the picture. #### The nervous system after a head injury Your autonomic nervous system is constantly evaluating what is happening inside and around you, looking for cues of safety, threat, or the need for protection. This process is termed neuroception. A sudden injury can be a powerful signal of threat to the nervous system. Pain, inflammation, disrupted sleep, sensory changes, physical limitations, and the experience of the injury itself can all add to the body's sense that something isn't right. From a Polyvagal perspective, the nervous system may respond by shifting into protective states—mobilization such as fight-or-flight, or, when demands feel overwhelming, forms of shutdown or withdrawal. These responses are not signs that something is wrong with you. They are protective responses designed to help you cope. The challenge is that after an injury, the nervous system can sometimes remain more vigilant or reactive even as the original threat has passed. You may notice that it takes less stimulation to feel overwhelmed, that your body stays tense, or that ordinary demands suddenly require much more energy. In other words, recovery may involve more than healing from the injury itself. It may also involve helping the nervous system recognize that it is safe to gradually come out of protection. Our guide to understanding your nervous system explains these protective states and how they can influence the way you feel, think, sleep, and respond to stress. A gentle, passive approach ### How IASIS Microcurrent Neurofeedback may help Brain Recovery When the brain has experienced an injury, supporting the nervous system's ability to regulate and adapt can be an important part of recovery. Concussion recovery is not simply about whether an injury can be seen on a scan. The brain and autonomic nervous system work together continuously to regulate attention, movement, sensory processing, sleep, energy, emotional responses, and our ability to adapt to changing demands. When that system is struggling to find a stable rhythm, even ordinary stimulation can feel like too much. This can make IASIS particularly helpful in the context of concussion and TBI, where the brain may already be working harder to process information, regulate sensory input, and respond to everyday demands. IASIS Microcurrent Neurofeedback (MCN) is a passive neurofeedback approach that uses very low-intensity electrical pulses while monitoring brain activity. Rather than requiring you to actively concentrate, perform a task, or consciously control your brainwaves, IASIS provides a gentle feedback signal intended to support the brain's own regulatory processes. Concussions and traumatic brain injury are on the list of conditions that seem to be helped by IASIS Neurofeedback. Our IASIS research page links to a published paper on passive neurofeedback and mild traumatic brain injury, a white paper, and one stroke survivor's personal account. We share them with you so that you can make an informed decision if IASIS MCN is right for your concussion/TBI recovery. IASIS is complementary care and does not replace medical evaluation or treatment for a concussion, TBI, or stroke. It may, however, offer another avenue of support for people who continue to experience nervous-system and post-concussive challenges after the acute injury has been addressed. A Powerful Combination ### Where Coaching Fits IASIS is one tool we use to support the recovery process. We can also combine nervous system-informed coaching to learn tools to help create the conditions for greater regulation, capacity, and resilience as the brain and body continue to adapt. Coaching can be especially meaningful after a head injury, which is often lonely and frustrating. You may be grieving the version of yourself that felt sharp and steady, and pushing through in ways that keep your system on high alert. Learning to recognize your reactions and how to support them empowers you in your return to health. Coaching is educational and supportive in nature. It is not therapy or mental health treatment and is not intended to replace appropriate medical or mental health care. Sessions, timing, and cost ### What to expect IASIS sessions are passive. Book a Free Consultation --- # IASIS Neurofeedback for Migraine & Headaches in Apex, NC | Apex NeuroCare URL: https://apexneurocare.com/conditions/migraine-headaches/ Summary: Migraine and headaches are among the conditions that seem to be helped by IASIS Neurofeedback. Passive, drug-free sessions and coaching in Apex, NC. ## IASIS Neurofeedback for migraine and headaches When your head hurts more days than it doesn't, life gets small. Gentle support for a nervous system on high alert may help, alongside the care of your physician. Start here ### When to Seek Medical Care A new, sudden, or severe headache, a headache after a blow to the head, or a headache accompanied by fever, stiff neck, vision changes, weakness, or confusion warrants prompt medical evaluation. If your headache pattern has changed significantly, check with your physician before beginning any new approach. IASIS MCN is intended as a complementary wellness approach and does not diagnose, treat, or cure migraine or headache disorders. It is used alongside—not instead of—appropriate medical care. The connection ### How migraine, headaches, and the nervous system are connected If you live with migraine or frequent headaches, you know they are more than "just a headache." They can bring light and sound sensitivity, nausea, fog, and a hangover that lasts for days. Stress, poor sleep, hormonal shifts, skipped meals, and weather changes can all set them off. Many of those triggers run through the nervous system, which is always scanning for cues of safety or danger. When it spends most of its time in a protective state, whether the braced energy of fight-or-flight or the heavy shutdown of overwhelm, the body has little margin left and small stressors land harder. This does not mean your pain is imaginary. It means your nervous system is working hard to protect you, and it may be able to learn a calmer baseline. Our guide to understanding your nervous system explains these states. A gentle, passive approach ### How IASIS Neurofeedback May Help IASIS Microcurrent Neurofeedback (MCN) is a gentle, non-invasive technology designed to support nervous-system regulation and flexibility. A brief, imperceptible microcurrent signal does the work while you sit back and relax. There is nothing to concentrate on and nothing to relive. Headaches and migraine are among the reasons people seek out IASIS Neurofeedback. IASIS does not target pain directly. Instead, it provides gentle input intended to support the nervous system's ability to shift out of patterns of stress and toward greater regulation. While individual experiences vary, clients often describe feeling calmer, clearer, more grounded, and less reactive. Curious about the research? Explore the studies we link on our IASIS Studies page. A Powerful Combination ### Where coaching fits Trauma-Informed Nervous System Coaching is one of our core services, offering something a passive session cannot: practical tools you can use on a hard day. Coaching is gentle and collaborative, informed by Polyvagal Theory and other nervous-system approaches. You learn to notice the early signals that your system is ramping up, understand what your body may be communicating, and practice simple somatic tools that can help you move toward greater regulation. For people with migraine, this may include becoming more aware of what happens in your body before an attack and learning ways to respond when stress or activation begins to build. Coaching is educational and supportive in nature. It is not therapy or mental health treatment and is not intended to replace appropriate medical or mental health care. Sessions are available in person or online. Many clients combine coaching with IASIS MCN. IASIS supports the nervous system; coaching helps you learn how to work with it. For in-person clients, sessions can also include 30 minutes in the far infrared sauna. Sessions, timing, and cost ### What to expect IASIS sessions are passive. Brain fog is among the conditions that seem to be helped by IASIS Neurofeedback. Gentle sessions and coaching in Apex, NC. ## IASIS Neurofeedback for brain fog When your thoughts feel slow and far away and you can't seem to come back online, a nervous system stuck in protection may be part of the story. The connection ### How brain fog and the nervous system are connected Brain fog is not a medical term, but almost everyone knows the feeling. You read the same paragraph three times. You lose the word you were reaching for. You may be doing everything "right" and still feel like you are behind a pane of glass. Persistent brain fog can have many possible causes, from thyroid and sleep issues to medication side effects, hormonal changes, and the lingering effects of illness. If brain fog is new, persistent, or changing, it is important to consider those possibilities with your physician rather than assuming it is "just stress." We are not a substitute for that conversation. Stress can be part of the picture, too. Your autonomic nervous system continuously responds to cues of safety and threat, adjusting your state to help you meet what is happening around you. When your system perceives threat, it shifts resources toward protection. Sometimes that looks like fight-or-flight: racing thoughts, tension, restlessness, or attention that keeps scanning for what might go wrong. Other times it can look more like shutdown: heavy, numb, disconnected, unmotivated, or foggy. These are intelligent protective responses. The challenge is that when the nervous system spends too much time in states organized around protection—whether from ongoing stress, illness, overwhelm, or other experiences—clear thinking, memory, focus, and mental flexibility can become harder to access. This is one reason brain fog is not always something you can simply "think your way out of." Supporting the nervous system can be part of creating the conditions for greater clarity, focus, and connection. See our guide to understanding your nervous system for more explanation. A gentle, passive approach ### How IASIS Neurofeedback may help IASIS Microcurrent Neurofeedback (MCN) is a gentle, non-invasive technology that provides subtle input to the brain and nervous system. The goal is to support the nervous system's ability to shift out of patterns of prolonged stress and become more flexible and regulated. An extremely low, imperceptible microcurrent signal does the work while you simply sit back and relax. There is nothing to concentrate on, nothing to perform, and nothing you need to "get right." That can be especially meaningful when brain fog and fatigue have already made effort feel harder than it should. Brain fog and chronic fatigue are among the concerns people bring to IASIS. IASIS MCN does not target brain fog as an isolated symptom. Instead, it provides gentle input intended to support the nervous system's regulation, which may create a better foundation for clarity, focus, energy, and resilience. Clients may notice changes such as feeling calmer, clearer, more grounded, or less reactive over time. Experiences vary, and we do not promise a particular outcome. Beginning with a free 20 minute consult is a great first step to see if IASIS MCN might be right for you. Explore the research we share on our IASIS studies page. A Powerful Combination ### Where coaching fits Trauma-Informed Nervous System Coaching can complement IASIS by helping you understand your nervous system and develop practical ways to work with it in everyday life. IASIS provides gentle, passive input to the brain and nervous system while you relax. Coaching is more active. You learn to recognize the states your nervous system moves through, notice patterns that may keep you in protection—such as overriding your limits or pushing through exhaustion—and practice simple somatic strategies that support greater regulation and flexibility. The two approaches can work well together because they offer different kinds of support. IASIS gives your nervous system space to receive gentle input without requiring effort or concentration. Coaching helps you become more aware of your nervous system and build skills for responding to it differently. Neither requires you to force change or simply think your way out of a pattern. Coaching is educational and supportive in nature. It is not therapy or mental health treatment and is not intended to replace appropriate medical or mental health care. It is practical, forward-looking support and can be done in person or online. For those who choose to combine the two, coaching can help you carry what you are learning in IASIS sessions into everyday life. In-person IASIS visits can also end with 30 minutes in the far infrared sauna. Sessions, timing, and cost ### What to expect IASIS sessions are passive: a short observation sheet, five pairs of electrodes, and then you rest. You won't feel the signal, though many people report feeling calmer, more relaxed, alert, and focused by the end. - The initial session runs about 45 to 60 minutes and includes intake paperwork. - Follow-up sessions typically last about 30 minutes. - IASIS MCN is cumulative, not one-and-done, and works best as a series. - We offer packages for 12, 20, and 40 sessions. See pricing and packages for current rates. - We cannot accept insurance; many clients use HSA or FSA funds. Every journey begins with a free phone consultation and a free intake and trial session. More answers are on our FAQ page. A few honest words ### Is this right for you? Brain fog can have many causes, and persistent or worsening symptoms—especially when they appear alongside other concerning symptoms—deserve appropriate medical attention. We never want a wellness service to delay care that may be needed. Apex NeuroCare is a wellness practice in a home studio in Apex, NC, serving the Triangle in person and coaching clients online. We work alongside your medical and mental-health providers, not instead of them. IASIS may be worth exploring if you: - have considered or addressed potential medical contributors and are looking for gentle support for a stressed or depleted nervous system; - feel mentally tired, scattered, or "not yourself" after a prolonged period of stress, illness, or overwhelm; - are looking for a passive approach that does not require concentration, effort, or medication; - can sit comfortably in a chair for approximately 30 minutes. Our home studio is not currently wheelchair accessible. Common questions ### Brain fog, coaching, and IASIS Q: Is brain fog a medical condition? Brain fog is a description, not a medical diagnosis, and it can have many possible causes. If it is persistent or worsening, it is worth considering potential medical contributors with your physician. When those have been considered, nervous system patterns can also be part of the picture. This is where IASIS Neurofeedback and nervous system coaching may offer complementary support. Q: Do I have to do anything during an IASIS session? No. IASIS MCN is completely passive. You fill out a short observation sheet, we position five pairs of electrodes, and then you relax. You won't feel the signal itself. Many people report feeling calmer, more relaxed, alert, and focused by the end, though everyone is different. Q: How is coaching different from therapy? Coaching is a present-focused, body-based process that helps you understand your nervous system states and build practical tools for regulation. An important note. IASIS MCN is a complementary wellness approach and does not diagnose, treat, or cure medical or mental health conditions. Individual experiences and results vary. ### Ready to work with your nervous system instead of against it? Start with a free 20-minute phone consultation. But the journey Heather and I have walked together has been something else entirely. She holds a loving, safe, compassionate space. And within that space, I found my way back to myself. It has been the greatest gift of my life. It's transformed how I show up, how I parent, and it trickles out to my kids too. They're learning to source themselves through discomfort and hard feelings because of it. Heather loves you and meets you right where you're at. She holds the highest version of you, but without expectation of you to strive or work. Just a quiet knowing that your true self is ready to meet you, and a trust that it will as you show up. It has been an absolute gift and pleasure to receive from her.” Kristen · Coaching and IASIS MCN Client “I am so profoundly grateful to get to experience the truth of my life and my body in the safe spaces you help to create.” Chera · Coaching Client “I came to Heather burnt out and weighed down with grief. After 5 years of intense ministry, my nervous system was depleted. Heather is the patient and discerning teacher I needed to give my self-care tool box a boost and my body the attention it deserves. I am enjoying being less reactionary and more self-compassionate. Over time I have gone from spending most days on the couch to exercising again and dreaming about a healthier future me.” Louise · Coaching Client “Heather helped me calm my nervous system down during a very difficult time of being stuck in fight or flight. She is very considerate of what you are dealing with in the moment. She educates you and teaches you tools to regulate your nervous system.” JR · Coaching Client “Working through this process with Heather has been profoundly transformative for me. What makes this work different is that it goes far beyond simply learning concepts intellectually — it teaches you how to slow down, listen to yourself, and develop real self-attunement and compassion. Heather is a trustworthy guide who brings her gift of attunement, patient gentleness, and clear passion for serving others into the sacred space of this work.” Annika C. · Coaching Client “It occurred to me that this is a task that I previously could not have imagined doing — having this ability to think, memorize, and process in a sustained way in the evening. Wow — I just surprised myself! Thank you for your help!” Barbara · IASIS Client “As a chronic insomnia sufferer, I experienced about a 60% improvement overall in quality of sleep, and about a 35% decrease in those 2 to 4 am wake-up events. And that was with only just a few treatments. The sessions are easy, fast, and completely painless.” Anonymous · IASIS Client ### Ready to write your own story? Answers to the questions we hear most about microcurrent neurofeedback in Apex, NC. ## Frequently asked questions Don't see your question? Ask us directly → Q: What is IASIS Microcurrent Neurofeedback? IASIS Microcurrent Neurofeedback (MCN) is a gentle, non-invasive technology that helps the brain and nervous system release stuck stress patterns and become more flexible and regulated. Using extremely low levels of microcurrent stimulation, IASIS supports the nervous system without requiring you to relive past experiences or "try harder" to change. Clients often report feeling calmer, clearer, more grounded, and less reactive over time. Q: Who can receive IASIS MCN? Anyone and everyone. IASIS MCN is safe and non-invasive, so if you can sit in a chair, you can receive a treatment. There is no medical condition, age, medication, allergy, or other factor that would prevent someone from safely being treated. Q: Is IASIS MCN safe? Yes, IASIS MCN is very safe. The system employs an FDA-registered EEG amplifier and is extremely safe. The treatment is non-invasive, drug-free, and pain-free. Q: Does IASIS MCN interfere with medication? No, IASIS MCN does not interfere with medication. Successive treatments may make a client more sensitive to their medication, meaning not as much is needed. Clients are strongly encouraged to consult with their prescribing physician about any changes. Q: Is IASIS MCN covered by insurance? IASIS MCN is not usually covered by insurance, and we are currently unable to accept insurance. Many clients use HSA or FSA funds — see our pricing page for details. Q: What does a session look like? You'll fill out an observation sheet, then we'll prep the electrode sites, apply paste, and position five pairs of electrodes. The actual treatment is passive — you relax while the system works. Q: How long does a session take? The initial session may last about 45–60 minutes and includes paperwork such as intake questionnaires and a liability release. Follow-up treatments typically last about 30 minutes. Q: Is one session all I need? The short answer is no — IASIS MCN is not a one-and-done protocol, though many people report feeling calmer even after their first session. It's a cumulative protocol: the shifts that happen in your autonomic nervous system stay, but it's a gentle process that takes time. With IASIS MCN you can reach enduring sustainability, where your nervous system holds the shifts and your brainwaves stay balanced. We offer packages for 12, 20, and 40 sessions. Q: What makes Microcurrent Neurofeedback unique? IASIS MCN is completely passive — you get to just sit back and relax while being treated. A brief, imperceptible microcurrent signal does all the work. It's safe, effective, non-invasive, drug-free, and pain-free. Q: Do you feel anything during a treatment? No, you won't feel anything specifically during a treatment, though many people report feeling calmer, more relaxed, alert, and focused by the end. Q: Are there published studies? Yes. Studies include research on Traumatic Brain Injury, a White Paper on the Integration of Microcurrent Neurofeedback, and Marcia Moran's stroke recovery story. See our research page for links. Q: Is your office wheelchair accessible? Unfortunately, not currently. Sessions are held in a home studio and can only accommodate those who are fully ambulatory. --- # Contact & Free Consultation in Apex, NC | Apex NeuroCare URL: https://apexneurocare.com/contact/ Summary: Book a consultation with Apex NeuroCare in Apex, NC. Your autonomic nervous system (ANS) is amazing. Its primary job is to keep you alive and help you adapt to the world around you — automatically, without you even thinking about it. It's constantly scanning your internal and external world for cues of safety or danger. This process, called neuroception, happens below conscious awareness. Based on what it detects, your nervous system shifts into different states designed to help you survive. According to Polyvagal Theory, there are three primary states. The three states ### None of these are bad — each one helps you survive Ventral vagal #### Safe & connected "Rest, digest, and connect." - Calm, grounded, present - Connect with others - Think clearly & be creative - Rest, heal, and adapt Sympathetic #### Fight or flight Energized & alert — protective. - Anxiety, worry, irritability - Restlessness, racing thoughts - Muscle tension, hypervigilance - Difficulty sleeping Dorsal vagal #### Freeze or overwhelm Shutdown — an intelligent survival response. - Exhausted or numb - Heavy, unmotivated - Depressed or hopeless - Foggy or disconnected This isn't weakness or laziness. Your body is doing exactly what it was designed to do — keep you safe. The communication highway ### Meet your vagus nerve The vagus nerve is the tenth cranial nerve and the longest nerve in the autonomic nervous system. The word vagus means "wandering," fitting because it travels from the brainstem throughout much of the body. It acts like a communication highway between your brain and body. You may have heard of the "gut-brain connection," but the conversation isn't one-sided — in fact, most of the nerve signals along the vagus nerve travel from the body to the brain, continually reporting what's happening inside you. Your brain is constantly asking, "Am I safe?" — and your body is constantly answering. An important truth ### Why can't I just think my way out of it? Nervous system states are physiological. They happen automatically. You don't choose them. If you find yourself anxious, shut down, exhausted, or overwhelmed, it doesn't mean you're weak, broken, or failing — it means your nervous system is trying to protect you in the best way it knows how. And while understanding what's happening is incredibly valuable, insight alone is often not enough. Healing involves helping your body experience safety — not just think about it. Regulation is the goal ### Your nervous system is not fixed — it's adaptable Your nervous system is always trying to move toward regulation, because regulation feels like safety. Sometimes we develop coping strategies — overworking, perfectionism, emotional eating, scrolling, staying busy, withdrawing — to get through difficult seasons. These aren't signs of failure. Often, they're signs of a nervous system doing its best to survive. With the right support, it can learn new patterns. You can increase your capacity to handle stress, experience more connection, and spend more time in states of safety, calm, and vitality. You don't have to force your body to change — you can learn to listen to it, work with it, and gently guide it toward regulation. From understanding to regulation ### Related services Understanding your states is the first step; the next is giving your body the experience of safety. Read about how this works in practice: Trauma-Informed Nervous System Coaching helps you recognize your patterns and build practical tools for regulation, and IASIS Microcurrent Neurofeedback is a gentle, passive approach that supports the nervous system's own capacity to regulate — both offered in Apex, NC. #### State of the Nervous System — Printable Poster A beautiful visual map of the three nervous-system states — ventral, sympathetic, and dorsal — to print and keep where you can see it. ### Ready to work with your nervous system? Polyvagal Theory, developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, explains how our autonomic nervous system works to keep us safe, alive, and connected — to ourselves and to others. Polyvagal Theory diagram. Download the free printable poster below. The first principle ### Neuroception: your safety scanner Your nervous system automatically scans for cues of safety and danger — in three directions. #### Inside What's happening within your body — heart rate, breathing, digestion, energy, sensation. #### Outside The world around you — sounds, sights, movement, and the overall environment. #### Between Other people — facial expressions, tone of voice, eye contact, presence. We're deeply relational. The second principle ### Hierarchy of state: your nervous system's ladder Our three states are organized in a hierarchy — an adaptive ladder. As the autonomic nervous system reads cues of safety and danger, it moves us along it: from ventral vagal (safety and connection), to sympathetic (fight or flight), to dorsal vagal (shutdown). Ventral vagal #### Safety Calm, grounded, connected, creative. Sympathetic #### Mobilized Fight or flight — alert, prepared to act. Dorsal vagal #### Shutdown Freeze — low energy, numbness, disconnection. None of these states are bad. Each is an adaptive response designed to help us survive. Read more about the three states → The spaces between ### Where we can slow down and get curious Where ventral vagal overlaps with sympathetic and dorsal, there are important spaces — places where we can slow down and become curious about our experience, noticing thoughts, emotions, body sensations, and reactions with greater awareness. With support, we can work gently with these experiences through somatic parts work, somatic EMDR, and other body-based practices. Healing doesn't come from forcing change. It comes from creating enough safety for the nervous system to move naturally toward regulation. The third principle ### Co-regulation: healing happens in relationship Co-regulation is the process by which nervous systems help one another feel safe. From birth, we rely on caring relationships to help regulate our emotions and physiology. When a caregiver responds with warmth, attunement, and consistency, a child's nervous system learns that the world is safe and relationships can be trusted. These early experiences shape attachment patterns — but they do not determine our future. At any age, we can develop greater security, resilience, and connection. As attunement deepens, trust grows; as trust grows, we become more embodied — more connected to who we truly are. And from that place of authenticity, we move toward wholeness. From theory to practice ### Related services Polyvagal Theory is the framework behind the work at Apex NeuroCare. Book a Free Consultation --- # What Is a Somatic Exercise? | Apex NeuroCare URL: https://apexneurocare.com/learn/somatic-exercises/ Summary: Somatic exercises are body-based practices that help release stored stress and tension from the nervous system. Learn what they are and how Apex NeuroCare weaves them into coaching. ## What is a somatic exercise? Body-based practices that help release stored stress and tension — and a core part of coaching at Apex NeuroCare. Somatic exercises are body-based practices that help release stored trauma, stress, and tension held in the nervous system. Rather than processing experiences solely through talk or cognitive approaches, somatic work engages the body directly — working with the same pathways where stress is stored. These gentle, guided movements and awareness practices help restore the body's natural capacity for self-regulation and ease. ### Why they help Somatic exercises offer cues of safety and support to our nervous system. They can also help address stuck patterns and stored stress in the body. By listening to the body, we can follow its impulses to complete cycles and allow shifts and change to occur. We can trust the wisdom of the body to safely guide this process. ### How somatic work fits into coaching At Apex NeuroCare, somatic exercises are woven directly into trauma-informed nervous system coaching. In a typical session we begin with safety and regulation, build awareness of your inner world, work with what's present in the body right now, and gently process and integrate using somatic parts work and felt-sense awareness — all at a pace that feels safe. The takeaway: you don't have to "think" your way to change. Somatic work gives your body the experience of safety it needs to move toward regulation — and that's where lasting change begins. What neuroception is, why effort backfires, and what actually helps. ## Why "Just Relax" Doesn't Work: A Nervous System View of Stress September 7, 2026 · by Heather Wilson · nervous system, stress Someone tells you to relax. You know they mean well. And you notice that the instruction does exactly nothing. If anything, you feel a little more tense than you did a second ago. There is a good reason for that, and it isn't a failure of willpower. ### Regulation is a state, not a decision Your autonomic nervous system runs quietly in the background, keeping you alive and adjusting you to the world around you. It does this automatically. You don't choose your heart rate, your breathing, or whether your shoulders climb toward your ears in a hard conversation. Those responses come from the body, not from a decision. So when someone says "just relax," they are asking you to make a choice about something that isn't a choice. Calm is not a setting you flip on. It is a state your nervous system moves into when it senses enough safety. ### Neuroception: the scanner you can't turn off Underneath everything, your nervous system is constantly scanning for cues of safety or danger. It checks inside your body, the environment around you, and the people you are with. Dr. Stephen Porges, who developed Polyvagal Theory, called this process neuroception. It happens below conscious awareness, faster than thought. That's why you can be at a perfectly ordinary dinner and still feel on edge, or lie down in a quiet room and stay wide awake. Your thinking brain may know you are safe. Your nervous system hasn't agreed yet. ### Three states, none of them wrong Polyvagal Theory describes three primary states your nervous system moves between: - Ventral vagal: safe and connected. You feel calm, grounded, and present. You can think clearly, connect with others, and rest. - Sympathetic: fight or flight. Energized and alert. This is where worry, irritability, racing thoughts, and muscle tension live. - Dorsal vagal: freeze or shutdown. Heavy, numb, foggy, exhausted. It looks like collapse, but it is a protective response too. None of these states is bad. The trouble is getting stuck in one, or shifting into protection when nothing is actually threatening you. For a fuller walkthrough, see Understanding Your Nervous System. ### Why trying harder backfires Effort is a sympathetic activity. When you grit your teeth and try to force yourself calm, you are adding more activation to a system that is already activated. It's like pressing harder on the gas pedal to slow the car down. That's also why frustration piles on so quickly. First you feel tense. Then you feel tense about being tense. Then you feel like you're failing at the one thing everyone says should be easy. Each layer is more sympathetic charge, not less. ### What actually helps If calm can't be commanded, it can be invited. The nervous system moves toward regulation when it receives enough cues of safety, and those cues come mostly through the body and through other people. Co-regulation. Nervous systems settle each other. A steady voice, a warm face, someone who is not in a hurry: these are some of the strongest safety cues there are. We are wired to borrow calm from one another before we can find it alone. Simple somatic practices. Somatic exercises are gentle, body-based practices that offer your nervous system cues of safety. Three you can try right now: - Orient to the room. Slowly let your eyes wander and land on whatever they like. Notice a color, a shape, some light. Let your head turn with your eyes. You are giving your scanner fresh evidence that this place is safe. - Lengthen the exhale. Don't force a deep breath. Just let the out-breath be a little longer than the in-breath, a few times. A long exhale is one of the body's own signals that the danger has passed. - Feel what's holding you. Notice your feet on the floor and the chair under you. Let your weight settle. Support is a safety cue, and your body can register it directly. None of these require effort. They ask you to notice, not to perform. ### How we support this at Apex NeuroCare Trauma-Informed Nervous System Coaching helps you learn your own patterns: which state you tend to live in, what tips you into protection, and what brings you back. Sessions are body-based and present-focused, and somatic practices like the ones above are part of every session. Over time you build a set of tools that fit your nervous system rather than fighting it. IASIS Microcurrent Neurofeedback (MCN) works from a different direction. It is completely passive. You sit back while a brief, imperceptible microcurrent signal gently encourages the brain to release stuck patterns, supporting the nervous system's own capacity to regulate. Nothing to practice, nothing to try harder at. Clients often report feeling calmer and less reactive over time. Each of these core services stands on its own, and many people find they work well together: coaching helps you understand and process, and IASIS helps your system let go. So the next time someone tells you to just relax, you can let yourself off the hook. Your body isn't being difficult. It is asking for safety, not instructions. If you'd like to talk about what that might look like for you, I offer a free 20-minute consultation. No pressure, just a conversation. IASIS MCN is a complementary wellness approach and does not diagnose, treat, or cure medical or mental health conditions. Individual experiences and results vary. --- # Coaching or Therapy? How to Tell Which You Need Right Now | Apex NeuroCare URL: https://apexneurocare.com/blog/coaching-or-therapy/ Summary: An honest guide to what therapy is for, what nervous-system coaching does, why many people do both, and a few questions to help you choose your next step. ## Coaching or Therapy? How to Tell Which You Need Right Now September 7, 2026 · by Heather Wilson · coaching, getting started People often ask me some version of this question in the first five minutes of a consultation, usually a little apologetically. It's a good question, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a sales pitch. Here is how I think about it. ### What therapy is for Therapy, also called counseling or psychotherapy, is licensed mental health treatment. A therapist can assess and diagnose mental health conditions, build a treatment plan, and work with you over time on depression, anxiety disorders, trauma, grief, relationships, and the deeper history that shaped you. Psychiatrists and other prescribers can evaluate whether medication would help and manage it with you. Therapy is the right call when: - your symptoms are severe or getting worse - you are having thoughts of harming yourself or someone else - you are in crisis, or recovering from a recent traumatic event - you want a diagnosis, or need one for work, school, or insurance - you are on, or considering, medication for your mental health - you want to process your past in depth with a licensed clinician If you are in crisis right now, please don't wait for the right fit. In the United States you can call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, any time. ### What nervous-system coaching is Coaching is educational and supportive in nature. It is not therapy or mental health treatment and is not intended to replace appropriate medical or mental health care. So what does it do? Trauma-Informed Nervous System Coaching is present-focused and body-based. Rather than retelling your story, we work with what is showing up in your body right now. You learn to recognize which state your nervous system is in, whether that's calm and connected, revved up and anxious, or shut down and foggy. You learn what tips you into those states, and you build a practical set of regulation skills you can use in the moment. It's forward-looking: the aim is more capacity, more choice, and a body that feels more like home. Coaching tends to be a good fit when: - you know what your patterns are, but you can't seem to change them - you've done talk-based work and want something that reaches the body - you feel wound up, reactive, or flat much of the time, without being in crisis - you want skills and tools, not a diagnosis - you want someone alongside you as you practice, week to week ### Many people do both This isn't an either/or choice. Some of my clients are in ongoing therapy and come to coaching for the body-based, in-the-moment skills their sessions don't focus on. Others finish a season of therapy and want support carrying what they learned into daily life. Some start with coaching, notice something deeper surfacing, and decide to add a therapist. Coaching complements therapy because the two work on different layers. Therapy helps you understand and process. Coaching helps your body learn what safety feels like and stay there longer. If you are working with a therapist, coaching can sit alongside that work rather than compete with it. There is a third option worth knowing about. IASIS Microcurrent Neurofeedback (MCN) is a passive, non-invasive brain wellness technology that supports the nervous system's own capacity to regulate. There is nothing to talk about and nothing to practice; you sit back while it works. It is one of our core services and stands on its own, and many people also pair it with coaching or use it alongside therapy. Clients often report feeling calmer and less reactive over time. ### Questions to ask yourself - Am I safe right now? If not, therapy or 988 comes first. - Do I want a diagnosis or help with medication? That is a licensed clinician's job. - Do I mostly want to understand my past, or change how my body responds today? - Have I already done a lot of talking, and my body hasn't caught up? - Do I need skills I can use this week? - Would it help to have both kinds of support? There are no wrong answers. Your answers simply point you toward a first step. If you're still not sure, that's fine too. Have a look at our frequently asked questions, or book a free 20-minute consultation. If therapy is the better fit for you right now, I will tell you so. IASIS MCN is a complementary wellness approach and does not diagnose, treat, or cure medical or mental health conditions. Body-based somatic tools you practice in your own space. ## Online nervous system coaching Trauma-informed, Polyvagal-informed coaching for your nervous system, by secure video call from wherever you are in the world. Body-based tools you learn, and practice, in your own space. What it is ### Nervous system coaching, wherever you are Trauma-Informed Nervous System Coaching is one of the core services at Apex NeuroCare, alongside IASIS Neurofeedback. Online sessions follow the same approach as sessions in Apex: Polyvagal-informed, body-based, and present-focused. Rather than retelling your past, we work with what is showing up in your nervous system right now. You learn to recognize when your body tips into high alert or shutdown, what your early signals feel like, and what actually helps it settle. Coaching is educational and supportive in nature. It is not therapy or mental health treatment and is not intended to replace appropriate medical or mental health care. Sessions are with Heather Wilson, a trauma-informed nervous system coach trained in Integrative Somatic Parts Work and a Biology of Trauma™ Professional. Body-based, on screen ### How somatic work translates to video Somatic work sounds like it needs a shared room, but most of it happens inside your own experience, and that comes with you to the call. You are guided on screen; you notice, breathe, and move in your own space. - Guided awareness. We slow down and notice what is happening in your body: breath, temperature, tension, and the places that already feel settled. Naming sensation is a skill you can build anywhere. - Orienting. Letting your eyes move around the room you are in and land on something pleasant or neutral. It is a simple cue of safety, and practicing it in your own room means it is ready to use there later. - Breath. Unhurried breathing, often with a longer exhale, that you try in real time and adjust to what feels right for your body. - Movement. Small, gentle movements such as pressing your feet into the floor, pushing against a wall, or a slow sway, done at your own pace. There is a quiet advantage, too: you are practicing in the place where you will actually use these skills. New to this way of thinking? Start with Understanding Your Nervous System → A good fit? ### Who online coaching suits - People anywhere in the world who want trauma-informed, Polyvagal-informed coaching without being limited to who is nearby. - Triangle residents who would rather skip the drive to Apex, or need a session to fit around a full day. - People who feel safer at home, in their own surroundings, especially when starting something new. Not sure whether coaching or therapy is the right fit for you right now? Read Coaching or Therapy? How to Tell Which You Need Right Now. Online coaching is not a crisis service. If you are in immediate danger, contact your local emergency services. In the US, call 911, or call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline). What to expect ### What a session looks like online Set yourself up in a quiet, private space where you will not be interrupted or overheard, with your camera on so we can see each other. Sessions are 60 minutes over a secure video call and follow the same gentle structure as in-person coaching: #### Safety & regulation We start with simple somatic tools to help your body feel grounded and supported where you are sitting. #### Awareness We notice patterns, triggers, and sensations, not to analyze them, but to understand them. #### Work with what's present We focus on what is showing up in your body right now, at a pace that feels safe. #### Process & integrate Using somatic parts work and felt-sense awareness, we give what has been held room to settle. #### Take it with you You leave with practices to use between sessions, in the same space you just tried them. Practical details ### Time zones, scheduling, and pricing Sessions are scheduled within our appointment hours, Mon-Sat: 8:00 AM – 7:00 PM · Sun: Closed, Eastern Time (Apex, North Carolina). Online coaching too. ## Nervous system coaching and IASIS Neurofeedback near Cary Apex NeuroCare is a home studio on the west side of Apex, about a 20-minute drive from much of Cary. Our two core services, Trauma-Informed Nervous System Coaching and IASIS Neurofeedback, are both offered here in person, and coaching is available online as well. Getting here from Cary ### A short drive across the town line Cary and Apex share a border, so for most Cary residents the trip is about 20 minutes, usually by US-1 or US-64, and a little longer at rush hour. The studio sits on the Chatham County side of Apex, so the drive is often shorter from west Cary than from the east side of town. Appointments run Monday through Saturday, 8am to 7pm. That leaves room to come in before work, between school runs, or on a Saturday morning. What a visit involves ### Why a 20-minute drive suits IASIS sessions IASIS Microcurrent Neurofeedback (MCN) is offered in person only. Your first visit runs about 45 to 60 minutes and includes intake paperwork. After that, follow-up sessions take about 30 minutes, and most of that time you simply rest while five pairs of small electrodes are in place. Because IASIS works as a series, the trip matters. The recommended 12-session schedule begins at twice a week for three weeks, so from Cary you are looking at roughly 40 minutes of round-trip driving for a 30-minute session: a manageable ratio for an early morning or a long lunch. Packages of 12, 20, and 40 sessions are listed on our pricing page. In person or online ### Which services need the trip - Trauma-Informed Nervous System Coaching: in person in Apex, or online from home. - IASIS Neurofeedback: in person only. - Developmental Movements: in person. - Far Infrared Sauna: in person, and easy to add to an IASIS visit. If you would rather skip the drive on coaching weeks, online coaching lets you meet from your living room in Cary and save the trip for IASIS. Coaching is educational and supportive in nature. It is not therapy or mental health treatment and is not intended to replace appropriate medical or mental health care. Who reaches out ### Support for full, busy Cary lives Many people in Cary are balancing demanding careers, family schedules, and long stretches of stress that never quite lift. Some look for help with a mind that races at night, some with a short fuse they no longer recognize in themselves, and some simply want to feel at home in their body again. Anxiety and insomnia are among the conditions that seem to be helped by IASIS Neurofeedback. You do not need a diagnosis or a tidy label to start. A free 20-minute phone consultation is a good place to talk through what is going on and which service makes sense first. Cary questions ### Common questions Q: How far is Apex NeuroCare from Cary? About 20 minutes by car from most of Cary, depending on where you start and the time of day. The studio is a home studio at 60 Songbird Ct in Apex, on the west side of town. Book a Free Consultation --- # Nervous System Coaching & IASIS Neurofeedback near Holly Springs, NC | Apex NeuroCare URL: https://apexneurocare.com/areas-we-serve/holly-springs/ Summary: Families in Holly Springs can reach our Apex home studio in about 20 minutes for IASIS Neurofeedback, developmental movements, and coaching. ## Nervous system support near Holly Springs For Holly Springs families, Apex NeuroCare is about 20 minutes up the road: a quiet home studio in west Apex offering our two core services, IASIS Neurofeedback and Trauma-Informed Nervous System Coaching, along with developmental movements and far infrared sauna. The drive ### From Holly Springs to west Apex Most Holly Springs residents reach the studio in about 20 minutes, typically heading north on NC-55 or using NC-540. Because the trip runs between neighboring towns rather than into a city center, it can fit around a school day or a Saturday of errands. Hours are Monday through Saturday, 8am to 7pm. For parents ### When the whole family is stretched Many people in Holly Springs are raising kids while working full time. Some come looking for support for a child who struggles with focus, big feelings, or sleep, and then realize the parent could use support too. IASIS Neurofeedback is suitable at any age, and the full list of conditions that seem to be helped by IASIS Neurofeedback includes many concerns families raise. Developmental Movements are offered in person. The work starts with a movement and retained primitive reflexes assessment, followed by a personalized exercise plan, with reassessments along the way. It suits children and adults alike. Planning visits ### How IASIS sessions add up IASIS Microcurrent Neurofeedback (MCN) is in person only. The first visit takes about 45 to 60 minutes with intake paperwork, and follow-ups take about 30 minutes while you rest and the system works. A 20-minute drive each way around a half-hour session is easy to manage, and since a session is short, it is worth asking whether two family members can come on the same trip. IASIS works as a series, and packages of 12, 20, and 40 sessions (the 40-session option is our Family Plan) are on the pricing page. Trauma-Informed Nervous System Coaching works differently. You can meet in person in Apex or use online coaching from home, which saves the drive entirely on weeks when the calendar is full. Coaching is educational and supportive in nature. It is not therapy or mental health treatment and is not intended to replace appropriate medical or mental health care. Not sure where to begin? A free phone consultation is the simplest first step for any family. Holly Springs questions ### Common questions Q: How far is Apex NeuroCare from Holly Springs? About 20 minutes by car from most of Holly Springs. The studio is in a home on the west side of Apex, at 60 Songbird Ct. Q: Can children receive IASIS Neurofeedback? Yes. No age prevents someone from safely receiving IASIS MCN: if a child can sit in a chair for a short session, they can take part. Our ADHD and focus guide covers how it fits alongside developmental movements. Q: Do I have to come in for coaching? No. Coaching is available in person or online, so a Holly Springs parent can meet from home. IASIS, developmental movements, and sauna happen at the studio. Also nearby: Cary, Fuquay-Varina, Morrisville, Raleigh. See all the areas we serve → An important note. IASIS MCN is a complementary wellness approach and does not diagnose, treat, or cure medical or mental health conditions. That is long enough to plan around, so this page is about making the trip count: what needs an in-person visit, what can happen online, and how to group your sessions. Making the trip count ### Thirty minutes each way, thirty minutes in the chair Most people from Fuquay-Varina come north on NC-55 through Holly Springs or take NC-540 toward Apex. IASIS Microcurrent Neurofeedback (MCN) happens only at the studio. Your first visit lasts about 45 to 60 minutes, including intake paperwork, and follow-up sessions about 30 minutes. A typical follow-up therefore means about an hour behind the wheel for half an hour of rest. That ratio is worth planning for. The recommended 12-session schedule opens with two visits a week for three weeks, eases to weekly, then every other week, so the busiest stretch comes first and the driving thins out after it. IASIS packages come in 12, 20, and 40 sessions. Stack your visit ### Ways to get more from one drive - Add the sauna. A 30-minute far infrared sauna session can follow an IASIS visit at the studio. - Keep coaching at home. Online coaching means the drive is only for the in-person services. - Use Saturdays. Appointments run Monday through Saturday, 8am to 7pm. - Bundle services. Combo packages pairing IASIS with coaching are on the pricing page. In short: IASIS Neurofeedback, Developmental Movements, and Far Infrared Sauna are in person in Apex, while Trauma-Informed Nervous System Coaching, the other core service, can be in person or online. Who looks for this ### Growing families, longer commutes Many people in Fuquay-Varina are raising young families, and many commute some distance for work, so spare hours are scarce. They often reach out about stress that has settled into the body, brain fog and fatigue, trouble sleeping, or a child who finds it hard to focus. These are among the conditions that seem to be helped by IASIS Neurofeedback. Coaching meets you where you are, including at your kitchen table in Fuquay-Varina. Coaching is educational and supportive in nature. It is not therapy or mental health treatment and is not intended to replace appropriate medical or mental health care. Fuquay-Varina questions ### Common questions Q: How far is Apex NeuroCare from Fuquay-Varina? About 30 minutes by car, depending on where in town you start and on traffic. The home studio is at 60 Songbird Ct, on the west side of Apex. Q: Is the drive worth it for a 30-minute session? That depends on your schedule, and it is a fair question to raise in your free consultation. Since IASIS works as a series, it helps to plan visits ahead, pair them with a sauna session, and keep coaching online. Q: Is there parking? Parking is available at the home studio. Also nearby: Cary, Holly Springs, Morrisville, Raleigh. See all the areas we serve → An important note. IASIS MCN is a complementary wellness approach and does not diagnose, treat, or cure medical or mental health conditions. Individual experiences and results vary. ### Coming from Fuquay-Varina? Trauma-Informed Nervous System Coaching is rooted in Polyvagal Theory and uses somatic (body-based) tools to help you notice your patterns and settle your system. Coaching is educational and supportive in nature. It is not therapy or mental health treatment and is not intended to replace appropriate medical or mental health care. Coming in person ### Planning IASIS visits from Raleigh IASIS Microcurrent Neurofeedback (MCN) is in person only, at the studio in Apex. From Raleigh the drive is about 35 minutes, usually by US-1 south or I-40 to US-1, and longer at rush hour. The first visit is about 45 to 60 minutes, including intake paperwork. Follow-ups take about 30 minutes. With roughly 70 minutes of round-trip driving for each half-hour session, it pays to plan ahead. The 12-session schedule starts at twice a week for three weeks, then weekly, then every other week; the 20-session schedule adds monthly visits after that. Developmental Movements and Far Infrared Sauna are in person as well, and a sauna session can be added to an IASIS visit so one trip covers both. Who reaches out ### City stress, carried in the body Many people in Raleigh carry a lot at once: demanding jobs, caregiving, graduate school, commutes on the Beltline. Some arrive after years of talking about their stress and still feel it in their chest, their sleep, or their temper.
